Clothing Repair with Carolanne Graham

Wednesdays May 15, May 22, May 29, June 5 and June 12 | 4 - 5:30 PM
The Dr. Anne Tanenbaum Gallery School

Join us each Wednesday where youth will learn to repair and reinforce worn spots in their favourite jeans, shirts and sweaters. You can replace the inner thighs, a frayed elbow or that cell phone hole you always seem to get in your back pocket. Using a variety of threads, wool and fabric scraps you will learn the techniques needed to extend the life of all your favourite garments.

Carolanne Graham's practice is quilt making and mending by hand with naturally dyed fabrics. She is drawn to the colours that come from nature and the hard work it takes to extract them. When her hands are in every production stage, that physical engagement results in an object that feels deeply meaningful. Such a process-intensive approach means that work is done very slowly. But at the age of 24, when she started sewing, slowing the process of making felt like a necessary act of resistance. And if slow stitching is resistance, then mending is the spiritual victory. A victory over the pressure to consume and instead, invest care and responsibility for the objects in our lives. Slow stitching encourages time for reflection and brings comfort in quiet repetition.
