Join Eva Respini with Adam Welch in conversation about artist Rodney Graham (1949-2022). Learn about the Canadian artist’s expansive practice spanning five decades, including photography, painting, sculpture, film, music and video. Graham’s Media Studies ’77 (2016) is currently on view as part of Light Years: The Phil Lind Gift.
Eva Respini is Co-CEO and Curator at Large at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Respini served as the curator and co-commissioner for the 2022 U.S. Pavilion’s presentation of Simone Leigh at the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. Between 2015-2023, Respini was Deputy Director and Barbara Lee Chief Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston (ICA/Boston). Prior to her tenure at the ICA/Boston, she served as Curator at the Museum of Modern Art for more than a decade in the department of photography, where she curated numerous acclaimed exhibitions of contemporary art and photography.
Respini has been a visiting lecturer, critic, and speaker at a number of universities and currently teaches a seminar on curatorial practice at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design. Other universities where she has taught and lectured include School of Visual Arts, Columbia University; Yale University’s School of Art; and the School of Visual Arts, New York. She has published numerous books and catalogues and her writing appears in museum publications and periodicals.
Adam Welch is Curator, Modern Art at the AGO, and curator of Light Years: The Phil Lind Gift. Prior to joining the AGO in 2023, Adam held various curatorial roles at the National Gallery of Canada (NGC), the Art Museum at the University of Toronto and the Whitney Museum of American Art. His exhibitions for the NGC include the retrospective General Idea (2022), Joseph Beuys (2015–17), The Advent of Abstraction (2016–17), and the Indigenous and Canadian Galleries (2017). He holds an MA from Columbia University, and a PhD in the history of art from the University of Toronto, where he is an Assistant Professor, Status Only.
