How to Identify and Buy Vintage Clothing

“Buy Less, Choose Well, Make It Last” – Vivienne Westwood

Are you curious what makes an item vintage? How to tell when a garment was made? Andréa Lalonde will be sharing insights into the vintage buying and selling including dating garments, identifying fabrics, quality and condition. To illustrate the difference in eras, participants will have the chance to see clothing from the early 20th century to the ‘50s and ‘60s up close; pieces are from her own collection, as well as treasures from other historical collections.

Andréa Lalonde graduated from the Nova Scotia College of Art and design with an interdisciplinary degree. She splits her time working with vintage and visual arts, fascinated by ways those come together. Andréa owns Nouveau Riche Vintage, a collection and pop-up project. She previously worked as a vintage clothing buyer in Montreal for many years and as an assistant for a film and television costume collection. Over the last 15 years, Andréa has worked as an artist-educator at museums and artist-run centres including the ROM, the AGO, the Design Exchange and Oakville Galleries.
