The March First Thursday: Down the Rabbit Hole
Manifest a new reality in the mirror of your mind! For this Yayoi Kusama-inspired First Thursday, the AGO partners with OCAD University’s Graduate Criticism & Curatorial Practice candidates to guide guests Down the Rabbit Hole—shedding the familiar and unlocking doors to unknown realms. Taking as starting point Kusama’s own claim of being a “modern day Alice in Wonderland,” the night’s program will echo the ways her work inspires us to step over thresholds into enchanted worlds that challenge our perceptions.
Headlining the night is Montreal band TOPS, with their dreamy synthpop sounds guiding visitors through a hypnotic dreamscape on the mainstage in Walker Court. You can also expect a live performance of Multiforms by choreographer Amanda Acorn, sure to awaken our senses with exploration of the human condition. Also showing will be the sculptural forms of Hoda Zarbaf, inviting viewers to reinterpret familiar spaces with surprising interventions, and Yoshiki Nishimura’s Synthetic-free experimental video work, where real and virtual worlds meld.
In addition, don’t miss a collage party led by artist Leeay Aikawa or pop-up talks hosted by the Angry Asian Feminist Gang and visual perception researcher Dirk Bernhardt-Walther. Beats will be provided by Synthesexer in Walker Court, and DJ Denise Benson and, as always, there will be delectable bites and beverages featured in the Night Market. The night’s unique artists-designed program will be created by Leeay Aikawa.
