Maria Chávez: Dusk Soundscapes
A leading voice in sound art and DJing, Maria Chávez creates a living soundscape that shifts and evolves as the sun sets over Walker Court. Attuned to the room, the audience, and the celestial, Chávez blends fractured records, ambient tones, and pulsing beats. As daylight fades, soft ambient sounds and crackling vinyl will fill the space, creating a meditative atmosphere. The energy builds, and as night falls, Chávez transforms the space into a celebration, inviting audiences to dance.
Enjoy free admission as part of First Wednesday Night Free and experience dusk in a whole new way.
Born in Lima, Peru, and based in NYC, Maria Chávez is best known as an abstract turntablist, sound artist, and DJ. Coincidence, chance, and failures are themes that unite her work across mediums, including improvised performance, sound, marble sculpture, visual art, and book objects. Her work has been featured and supported by many institutions over the years, including Rewire Festival, Counterflows Festival, Donau Festival, The Guggenheim Museum, The Getty, The Wire, MOCA Jacksonville, Black Mountain College Museum, and more. Chavez’s 2012 book, Of Technique: Chance Procedures on Turntable has garnered a reputation as both an academic resource on turntablism and a foundational text for a new generation of turntablists.
