Recuerdo: Latin American Photography opening
Join us to mark the opening of Recuerdo: Latin American Photography at the AGO featuring remarks from artists and exhibition curator Marina Dumont-Gauthier, AGO Curatorial Assistant, Photography.
Recuerdo – in Spanish meaning both “memory” and “I remember” – presents a cross-section of art from and of Latin America. Interweaving works by foundational Latin American image-makers such as Manuel Álvarez Bravo and Graciela Iturbide, of artists working in the diaspora like Rafael Goldchain, and of Canadian photographers who have produced some of their defining bodies of work there, including Barbara Astman and Michael Mitchell, the exhibition presents both collective and personal stories as it considers photography’s role in shaping memory and identity. Emerging from a project to explore the AGO’s collection and identify works falling under the broad umbrella of Latin American photography, Recuerdo asks viewers to consider how this category was formed and the ways in which global and local perspectives shape our understanding of it. This exhibition is curated by AGO Curatorial Assistant Marina Dumont-Gauthier.
