PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Twisted Circus was an exhibition by young artists that pushed the boundaries of the norm. Inspired by the AGO exhibition Provisional Worlds, which featured the works of seven contemporary Canadian and international artists who use mass-produced objects and found materials, the Teen Council invited Toronto’s Hive Projects to create a temporary environment in the AGO’s Walker Court. Hive Projects built a giant tent constructed from recycled parachutes to house a sideshow of the evocative and the bizarre. In this “provisional world”, art from a wide variety of visual, sculptural and dramatic streams was displayed in structures made from PVC piping, styrofoam and other industrial materials.
The AGO Gallery Troupe, a group of young performers who use the AGO as their backdrop, provided a ‘performance installation’ and Toronto ensembles deep six and DSKP (complete with go-go dancers) played acoustic sets. A real strongman, Rohab, was also present and conducted periodic demonstrations. Teen Council curators described the visual art exhibition, which featured 44 young artists, as “90 degrees from normal”.
