In case you missed them

From book launches to panel discussions and curator’s talks, the AGO has hosted some incredible conversations recently. Didn’t attend them live? Don’t worry. We’ve got video!

Canadian author Esi Edugyan joined literary critic Donna Bailey Nurse for a conversation about her career, her art and her Giller Prize-winning novel, Washington Black

As the imaginative centre of Toronto, the AGO is always bringing international voices to our local audience. Over the last few months, we’ve had a number of artists, authors, musicians, comedians and all-around cool people join us to share their knowledge and tell their stories. To celebrate these inspiring and thought-provoking conversations, we’ve pulled together a list of our favourites featuring curators, artists, authors and more. Check them out.

Curator's Talk: Gary Garrels

Gary Garrels is the Elise S. Haas Senior Curator of Painting and Sculpture at SFMOMA and the co-curator of the exhibition Vija Celmins: To Fix the Image In Memory, on view now until August 5. He travelled from San Francisco to help us open the show, and while he was here he shared his thoughts on the mesmerizing works and storied career of Vija Celmins.

AGO Livestream | Esi Edugyan with Donna Bailey Nurse

A few months ago, Canadian author Esi Edugyan joined literary critic Donna Bailey Nurse for a conversation about her career, her art and her Giller Prize-winning novel, Washington Black.

Talking to Curators: New Views of Impressionism

This past winter the AGO had two incredible, very different exhibitions on view. Impressionism in the Age of Industry: Monet, Pissarro and more featured industrial-themed works by French artists circa 1870–1900, while Mickalene Thomas: Femmes Noires explored the representation of Black women through the artist’s reinterpretation of iconic images in Western art history, by artists like Gustave Courbet, Pablo Picasso and Édouard Manet. Drawing on their own work, our AGO curators chatted with Dr. Denise Murrell, curator of Posing Modernity: The Black Model from Manet and Matisse to Today, to talk about the links between these exhibitions.

Curator’s Talk: Impressionism in the Age of Industry

Speaking of Impressionism, here is the groundbreaking curator’s talk by Dr. Caroline Shields, AGO’s Assistant Curator of European Art.  With insight into works by some of the world’s most recognizable artists (e.g., Monet, Degas, Pissarro), Dr. Shields discusses the way French Impressionists painted their rapidly modernizing world.

That’s not all! Join us July 17 for the launch of Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Colson Whitehead’s latest book, The Nickel Boys, and a talk about his artistic practice. We’re always announcing new conversations and insightful talks. Be sure to check our programs and events page and see what’s coming up next.
