Join us to celebrate the opening of The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century with an exciting night of live Hip Hop and contemporary art. Making its only Canadian stop at the AGO, explore the exhibition and see Canadian music legend, the godmother of Hip Hop, Michie Mee, perform at 8 pm. Playing before Michie Mee from 6 pm is Toronto's DJ Junia-T.
Michie Mee is known for her unique rap style of combining reggae and dancehall with hip hop. Among this Juno-nominated rapper and actress’s many achievements is being the first Canadian Hip Hop Recording Artist to sign an American Major Record deal, being the recipient of the 2012 DJ Stylus Hall of Fame Award, 2013 CUMC Lifetime Achievement Award, 2014 Black Canadian Award for Best Female Rap Act, and most recently making history, winning the Toronto Arts Council's Roy Thomson Hall Award of $10K. She was also featured in the 2011 CBC hip hop documentary Love, Props and the T. Dot, this trailblazer’s saga still continues. Michie Mee’s reign as Queen is far from over.
Junia-T is a Toronto based producer, songwriter and DJ. Among his many accolades are his shortlisted Polaris Music Prize album Studio Monk, producing credits with who’s who of up- and-coming global Hip Hop and R&B talent, and touring with Jessie Reys as her official DJ and longtime creative collaborator. Junia-T’s incredible creative influence and contagious positive vibes keep winning people over and building his name across many projects and platforms.
