WEEKLY OUTLINE
Week 1: Value and form. Introduction to materials. Monochrome still life painting with black and white paint. Working transparently and opaquely. Edges and gradients
Week 2: Colour and form. Introduction to the elements of colour. Colour mixing and relationships. Chromatic greys. Complete a small study with the primary colours and white.
Week 3: Colour and depth. Demonstration on how differences in value, hue, and chroma can create visual depth. Complementary colours. Temperature in relation to colour. Continue practicing the mixing of colours in the context of a still life.
Week 4: Overall palette. How to paint everything. Two studies of two landscapes focussing on overall light and atmosphere.
Week 5: Exploring the medium through experimentation and abstraction. More mark making, alternative tools, masking, glazing, pushing, and breaking down the medium. Create a multi-layered and abstracted still life painting.
STUDENT MATERIAL LIST
Acrylic paints, brand of your choice, one tube of each colour, approximately 120 ml/5oz:
● Primary blue, phthalo or cobalt
● Primary red, naphthol or cadmium
● Primary yellow, hansa or cadmium light
● Titanium white (larger tube - we tend to use a lot of white)
● Acrylic matte medium (not gel) 120 ml/5oz or similar
Brushes and Other Materials:
● A large flat 2 inch chip/utility/house painters brush
● 2 medium sized filbert brushes (i.e., ½ and ¾ inch hog bristle or synthetic/taklon),
● 1 small round brush that makes a nice point
● Any other brushes you would like use
● A Palette: foam or plastic plates or trays. White is ideal. (Alternative - any flat stiff surface covered with wax paper or aluminum foil, a disposable palette pad)
● Painting rag: cotton cloth, an old shirt
● Water container: 450ml-750ml vessel that you will not use to drink from, yogurt container.
● Pencil
● Masking tape
Surfaces:
Choose 5 surfaces (one for each class). These surfaces can be any of the following options:
Option 1: Canson XL Mixed Media Pad 11 x 14 inch or 18 x 24 inch. Each student will need to prime a sheet with gesso before class (student gesso, 16 oz.).
OR Option 2: Stretched canvases or canvas panels 11 x 14 inch or 18 x 24 inch.
OR Option 3: Canson Canva-paper pad, at least 11 x 14 inch.
These are the recommended materials for this course. Your instructor may recommend additional optional materials on additional days. All sizes are approximate. Our Instructors will do their best to accommodate alternative materials whenever possible.
