"To see yourself and for others to see you is a form of validation... I'm interested in that very mysterious and mystical line that is how we relate to each other in the world." Combining painting, photography, collage and film, Mickalene Thomas: Femmes Noires presents a bold collection of vibrant and politically charged works, taking inspiration from art histories and movements including Impressionism, Cubism, Dada and the Harlem Renaissance. Thomas challenges ideas about race, gender, celebrity culture and sexuality through a queer feminist lens, fleshing out what it means to be a Black woman in the 21st century.
