EXCLUSIVE | RAGNAR KJARTANSSON: DEATH IS ELSEWHERE
Join Adelina Vlas, Associate Curator, Contemporary Art, in conversation with Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson and Kitty Scott, Deputy Director and Chief Curator, National Gallery of Canada as they discuss Death is Elsewhere, a mesmerizing video installation currently on view at the AGO. Click here to watch.
Panoramic in scope, the installation comprises a circle of seven screens. Filmed under the midnight sun against the backdrop of the Laki volcano in South Iceland, the artwork offers visitors a stunning visual & sonic experience in a lush landscape of green grass and grey blue skies, punctuated at times by lava fields. Across this landscape, in opposition to each other, two couples move slowly, each made up of one member of a set of twins. The couples encircle the viewer, singing in unison repeatedly, a sad song of beauty and loss.
Ragnar Kjartansson is an internationally known performance and video artist living and working in Reykjavík, Iceland. Death is Elsewhere was recently acquired by the AGO, with generous support from Shabin and Nadir Mohamed. This event will take place earlier than most Curators' Circle Art Talks due to the time difference between Reykjavik and Toronto.
NOTE: Curators' Circle events are open to active Curators' Circle members. If you are interested in learning more about the philanthropic program please email: [email protected].
