Futures: Ron Deibert

Saturday November 9, 2019
Baillie Court, Art Gallery of Ontario

Inspired by the exhibition Hito Steyerl: This is the future, we invite leading thinkers to consider urgent issues around data, surveillance and technology.

Join Ron Deibert, a leading expert on digital technology, security, and human rights for a talk that explores the dark side of digital technology. A long term advocate for civil society on the internet, Deibert has been investigating internet censorship and surveillance for almost twenty years. He created Citizen Lab in 2001 to test and document how technology was changing the flow of information and civil liberties online.

Ron Deibert is professor of political science, and Director of the Citizen Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, University of Toronto. The Citizen Lab is an interdisciplinary laboratory focusing on research, development, and high-level strategic policy and legal engagement at the intersection of information and communication technologies, human rights, and global security. Deibert was a co-founder and a principal investigator of the OpenNet Initiative (2003-2014) and Information Warfare Monitor (2003-2012) projects, as well as a founder and VP of global policy and outreach for Psiphon, one of the world’s leading digital censorship circumvention services.

AGO Futures is an expansive range of artist, author and curator talks that examine the current issues inspiring artists working today.
