Inner Space with Jem Woolidge
Inner Space is a monthly web series co-curated by the Inner Space Youth Advisory and AGO staff; welcoming artists from across Canada to present personal studio tours. This month we meet artist Jem Woolidge a white-settler, transmasculine, emerging artist and facilitator based in Kjipuktuk (so-called Halifax, Nova Scotia). Jem has an interest in participatory textile work, illustrative storytelling and fashion design. Their studio practice has been influenced by their experience working with kids in art settings, often deploying playful participatory elements that invite viewers to engage with their work through games, jokes and dressing up. In his fashion work, embroidered, appliquéed and tapestried imagery is inserted into brightly coloured performance silhouettes. Jem has exhibited at Artspace, the Art Gallery of Peterborough, Ed Video, and the Khyber Centre for the Arts. His illustrations were included in the 2020 Canadian Art Winter School Guide, Call-Out Comics, and Peach Magazine. They’re currently completing a BFA in Textiles and Fashion at NSCAD University.
