It’s back-to-school season and time to hit the books. With Canzine Toronto, Canada’s largest festival of zines - organized by Broken Pencil, returning to the Weston Family Learning Centre later this month, there will be no shortage of fun reads.

We can’t wait! The festival, on Saturday, September 22, will include works from more than 200 artists, writers and comics vendors. And there’s an amazing lineup of events, including a special Canzine edition of the AGO’s E.P. Taylor Library & Archives Unshelved series, where AGO librarians and archivists give visitors a first-hand glimpse of highlights from the AGO Library & Archives collection.

To get you feeling zine-errific, here’s a sneak peek at a couple of the artists whose works will be featured at Unshelved:

The Fluxus Group
This international network of artists, composers, designers and poetic pranksters created a movement in the 1960s and ‘70s with their experimental art performances. Their anti-art and anti-commercialism stance helped create a “do it yourself” approach to the art world.

Lise Melhorn-Boe
Born in Noranda, a mining town in northwestern Québec, artist and teacher Lise Melhorn-Boe uses books, fabric, rubber stamps and other materials to create captivating artworks. For example, her piece High Heels, consists of paper high heels with insoles made from book pages featuring text about the joy and pain of wearing high heels. Melhorn-Boe uses humour and a light-hearted visual aesthetic to explore serious topics such as feminism and environmental issues.
