True And Functional is a time-based, multi-site artwork exploring ideas around Pan-African thought and Black cultural output. It’s a fieldwork of research and experimentation and is presented as an ongoing project – where each iteration is a collaged product of the artist's process. This work compounds elements of sound, music, text, image and video. Hunter uses this work to explore practices of sampling and re-interpretation – what he feels are integral art practices developed throughout the epoch of the contemporary African Diaspora.
True And Functional Vol. G is a cumulative project centered on narratives within the Caribbean diaspora. The project is a summation of practices including material investigation, sampling, and recompilation. This edition of the series largely references the AGO’s recently acquired Montgomery Collection as well as digitally sourced archival material.
Timothy Yanick Hunter is a multidisciplinary artist and curator based in Toronto. Hunter's practice employs strategies of bricolage to examine non-neutral relationships relating to Black and Afro-diasporic experiences as well as concurrent strategies of decolonization. His approach alternates between exploratory and didactic; with a focus on the political, cultural and social richness of the Black Diaspora. Hunter's work often delves into speculative narratives and the intersections of physical space, digital space and the intangible.
