Close Looking: Book Design Alice C. Morse

Close looking is an online discussion series that invites people to spend time with a single work from the AGO Collection - observing its details, discussing its creation, its history and the artist’s intention through multiple senses and perspectives. Connecting art, access and learning, it’s a series that clears a space for us to appreciate the role that artists play in revealing and even shaping the world in which we live.

Join Erin Rutherford, Collection Development Librarian, as she discusses an artist-designed publisher's binding from the Collection of the E. P. Taylor Library and Archives. This short talk will focus on the book’s cover design in the Art Nouveau style and offer a glimpse into the life and work of its creator, Alice Cordelia Morse. How was Morse’s work rediscovered? How was the artist connected to the book’s illustrator? Might an inscription on the book’s endpapers reveal its previous owner? Tune in and “crank” up the volume to find out.

Automated captioning is available for all online programs. Please provide three weeks advance notice for requests for Verbal Description, American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation and/or live captioning for AGO programming. The AGO will make every effort to provide accommodation for requests made with less than three weeks notice. Please contact us to make a request for these accommodations.
