Water and light are a magical combination. And they inspired Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde’s large-scale light installation Waterlicht, which comes to Toronto this week.

Premiering at The Bentway (under the Gardiner Expressway), running October 12 to 14, this evocative installation – using LED lights, special software and lenses – will feature cascading waves of blue light to simulate a virtual flood. The work calls attention to rising water levels around the world due to global warming.

"Waterlicht is a powerful and poetic experience, reminding us of the role and importance of innovation. It’s also inspiration for the future. Can we build floating cities? How much power can we generate from the movement of water?" Roosegaarde told us.

Want to know more? On Saturday, October 13 at 1 pm, join us for On Water, a free talk in Jackman Hall with Roosegaarde. The panel also features Genie Award-winning Canadian and Anishinaabe filmmaker Lisa Jackson, OCADU Faculty of Design Assistant Professor James Miller and moderator Sarain Fox – an Anishinaabe artist, activist and host of our recently launched podcast series, Into the Anthropocene: Our Impact on Earth.

The talk will explore water sustainability and climate change – topics connected to our fall exhibition, Anthropocene.

Don’t miss this stunning installation at The Bentway, opening October 12, and the fascinating conversation at the AGO on October 13. Both events are free. Book your free tickets to On Water here.
