"The Golden King" is one of the epithets commonly associated with Tutankhamun as it evokes eloquently the famous golden mask and rich tomb treasure of this short-lived pharaoh. Each item in this glorious collection served to underpin a kingship ideology that portrayed the pharaohas son and representative of the sun-god by employing both traditional and innovative motifs.

This international symposium marks the closing of the exhibition, Beautiful Fictions: Photographic Art from the AGO featuring the Vivian and David Campbell Collection. The symposium will address issues central to the narrative of the exhibition: how the transition from darkroom to digital has changed the nature and status of photography, and our relationship to the physical world. Participating artists include Geneviève Cadieux (Montreal), Axel Hütte (Düsseldorf), Lorna Simpson (New York), and Michael Snow (Toronto).

From his early successes in the Pictorialist scene at the turn of the 20th century to his monumental 1955 exhibition The Family of Man, Steichen remains one of the most influential and controversial figures in the history of photography.

This talk is held in conjunction with the exhibition Edward Steichen: In High Fashion, the Condé Nast Years, 1923–1937.
