A (new) night at the museum

We value and appreciate our amazing AGO Members, which is why we’re launching a new series of exclusive Members’ Nights this summer. On July 18, we’re inviting our Members to join us between 5 and 9 pm to spend some time after hours at the AGO. You’ll also get to enjoy the perks of your AGO Membership and more during this special event. If you’re not currently a Member, this is the perfect time to become one!

Art Pick of the Week: St. Benedict Restores Life to a Young Monk

When looking at this week’s Art Pick – Giovanni del Biondo’spainting St. Benedict Restores Life to a Young Monk – many things may catch your eye. Perhaps it’s the figures, the colours or the gold leaf that depicts the halo around St. Benedict’s head emphasizing holiness.

These are fantastic details, but if you look a little closer at this 14th century painting, located on Level 1 in the Reuben Wells Leonard Memorial Gallery (Gallery 117), you might notice something else – a story coming to life.

A book worth picking up

When asked what we all need more of in our lives, Colson Whitehead pauses. “I’m ready,” he says, “to make the transition to these fake meat hamburgers.” But as the author of eight books and the recipient of numerous awards and prizes, including the 2017 National Book Award for Fiction and a Pulitzer for his last novel, The Underground Railroad, that’s not all Whitehead is getting ready for.

Plenty of plein air

The city is finally alive with the sights and sounds of summertime. With inspiration from all the bright colours and liveliness of the streetscape, it’s the perfect time to take your artmaking to the next level with one of the AGO’s many plein air courses for adults and kids.

Check out this list of some of our favourites, or visit the website for more details.

That’s the snuff!

At the AGO, you can see art from many different places and times throughout history. Ken Thomson’s prized collection of Chinese Snuff Bottles is a “must-see” for your next visit. Take a trip to the Thomson Collection of European Art (Gallery 111 on Level 1) to uncover some of the fascinating details and little known facts about these treasured pieces of Chinese art history.

Origin stories

It's been 2 full years since the J.S. McLean Centre was renovated, reinstalled and renamed as part of the AGO-wide Look:Forward project. Following a complete renovation of the individual galleries and the reinstallation of over 75 works, the Centre reopened for Canada Day 2018 as the J.S. McLean Centre for Indigenous & Canadian Art. And since we’re open this Canada Day weekend – including Monday, July 1 from 10:30 am to 4 pm – it’s the perfect time to check out the incredible art on display there!
